Delays are expected after reports that a Powys train may have hit a downed tree between Welshpool and Newtown.

Passengers on the Cambrian line are facing disruption after unconfirmed reports that a train came into contact with a tree that had fallen on to the tracks near Caerhowel this afternoon (September 11).

Transport for Wales have confirmed that services will be disrupted between Shrewsbury and Newtown as result of the blocked track caused by a downed tree. Reports elsewhere online suggest that a train hit the fallen tree.

In a statement online, Transport for Wales said: “Due to a tree blocking the railway between Shrewsbury and Newtown Powys some lines are blocked.

“Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed.

“The disruption is expected until 6.30pm on September 11.

“The line blocked between Shrewsbury and Newtown in both directions - Attempts being made to source road replacement - please check back for updates.”

In posts on social media it has been claimed the train “hit a tree down at Caerhowel”.

One passenger claimed they are “stuck” and “heard crew say both units lost air pressure to control”.

National Rail have confirmed that disruption will be expected until late this evening

A spokesperson for National Rail said: "A tree blocking the railway between Shrewsbury and Newtown means trains running between these stations may be cancelled or revised.

"Disruption is expected until 10pm.

"Alternative travel advice:

"Two replacement buses provided by Lakeside Coaches will run between Newtown Powys and Shrewsbury, arriving at 5.40pm.

"Two replacement buses provided by Two Lloyds Coaches will run between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury at 5pm.

"Further buses are currently heading to Shrewsbury and are expected to arrive at 6.30pm.

"Extra road transport is currently being sourced for other parts of the network affected."

Transport for Wales have been approached for further comment.
