A topless man seen running towards a group of men with a crowbar shouting "come on" in a residential estate in Newtown will be sentenced by a crown court judge.

Ben Ralph, 27, pleaded guilty to both carrying the offensive weapon in Maesyrhandir's Robin Square and injuring a police officer by kicking while being forced into a vehicle at the police station.

Prosecutor Helen Tench told Welshpool Magistrates' Court that police received an anonymous phone call just before midday on Tuesday, July 9, that the defendant was seen carrying a baseball and another man had a knife in Robin Square.

After returning to an address, Ralph was then seen with a crowbar running towards men shouting "come on" then concealed the weapon with his arm and body.

Mrs Tench told the court on Tuesday, September 10, that CCTV footage showed a man running away from Ralph who was "clearly carrying a crowbar without a top".

Sergeant Coburn arrested Ralph whose blue crowbar was found rolled up in carpet.

"You won't arrest me", he told police before trying to flee, using threatening body language towards officers and refusing to get into a vehicle at Newtown Police Station.

Officers tried to force Ralph into the vehicle feet-first. Police Constable Davies grabbed the 27-year-old's ankle area before he was kicked in the arm which left him with swelling and soft tissue damage which needed to be checked over at the hospital.

Robert Hanratty, defending, said Ralph was on remand at HMP Berwyn while waiting for a trial to start in January over a separate case dating from about the same time.

"For his benefit, there will be an application for bail so that the crown court can consider bail in due course," Mr Hanratty said. "But in the meantime, he'll have to remain in custody."

Ralph, of Cledan, Newtown, was ordered to appear at Mold Crown Court for a committal hearing on Thursday, October 3.
