The Mayor of Newtown Mike Childs has resigned from his post unexpectedly, opening the door to a possible election.

Cllr Childs, who has only held been Mayor of the town since May, has unexpectedly resigned his position as both Mayor and as town councillor.

In a statement online the town council said: “Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council would like to express its gratitude to Mike for the time and effort he has given to the people of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn community in his role as Town Councillor & Mayor.”

When he took on the role, Cllr Childs said it was "a great honour to be chosen as Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn" adding "I am very pleased that all councillors supported my appointment – I will work hard to repay their trust.”

OTHER NEWS:

The resignation will now give electors 14 days to call for an election to replace Mr Childs in his vacant ward seat.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, said: "Your town council, as part of a representative democracy, is composed of the people the community elects to make decisions locally, on its behalf and in its best interests.

“If you have ideas to help make this community a better place to live, learn, work, or visit, and feel able to persuade others of their benefit over their cost, this is your opportunity.

“However, it's important to recognise that this opportunity extends beyond simply calling for an election; it is an invitation to consider standing as a town councillor.
