Five flats are set to be built in a Powys town centre by well-known waste management firm Potters after receiving approval from the council.

Potters Group can move forward to build the apartments in Welshpool's Church Street after receiving planning permission from Powys County Council.

Plans for the former JM Morris Foundry above Frank Lloyd and Get Connected were previously withdrawn after initially applying to build six flats.

In a design and access statement submitted to the council, Potters Group said: “The first and second floor has been vacant for a number of years. The proposal is to refurbish the first and second floor and bring life to the building again, by giving it an alternative use which will benefit the town generally in terms of bringing residents into the town.”

The company said that the plans would not alter the appearance of the building and would retain the character of the town centre.

The statement added: “The external alterations involved in making this conversion to happen are negligible which are located at the rear of the building which include the removal of an existing external staircase which is unsafe, the removal of an existing door to be replaced with a new window and an installation of a new window under the existing lintel which was there originally.”

The council were enthusiastic about the plans. In their report the planning officer dealing with the case said: “It is considered that the scheme is an acceptable one that will breathe new life into a listed building and will assist in securing its future maintenance.

“There are not considered to be any issues with amenity, and the fact that there are no amendments to the visible external elevations means that the proposal will sit well within the historic locality.

“No affordable units are required and no green infrastructure will be impacted upon. The recommendation is therefore one of approval subject to conditions.”
