A team from a Newtown family business is taking on the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon for local children’s hospices, Hope House and Ty Gobaith.

Six members from coal merchants G.Owen & Sons, with varying levels of running experience, have rallied to tackle the scenic 13-mile race.

Their main aim is completion, not competition, for this charitable cause that has a special place in their hearts.

Accounts administrator, Alison Higgins suggested the marathon endeavour.

Despite usually sticking to shorter distances, Ms Higgins once completed a 14-mile hike, suggesting she’s no novice to endurance events.

She said: "My aim is completion not position!"

Ms Higgins explained the motivation behind their choice of competition and cause.

She said: "Our director Dan Owen, and the team, wanted to take part in a local event for local charity.

"When I saw that Hope House had places for Lake Vyrnwy Half, it just made sense.

"Most of the team enjoy running and Hope House is such an important local charity.

"The team are hoping for a reasonable time around the lake and no doubt the locals will cheer and spur us on, too."

The team's fundraising results are already beyond expectations, as they've raised an impressive £2203 so far, surpassing their £1,000 target.

Ms Higgins added: "We’ve been telling everyone who comes in, and I’ve emailed all our suppliers.

"We’ve even got a collection box on our weigh bridge.

"The response from across the UK has been so generous."

Fundraiser Bekki Fardoe thanked the team for choosing to support Hope House and Ty Gobaith saying: "We’re very grateful to the team at G Owen for running the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon for us.

"They’ve already smashed their original target which is brilliant.

"Every single penny they raise will help us to support children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

"Whether they’re hoping to get a personal best, or just want to finish the course, we hope they manage to enjoy this picturesque run on the day."
