The bomb squad had to destroy a mortar found in a Powys car park on one of a number of call-outs across the county, it has been revealed.

In data released under the Freedom of Information Act it has been revealed that the Army’s Explosive Ordinance Team have been called out by the public for various explosive threats found around Powys.

One such incident saw a member of the public have to ring to emergency services after they found a mortar shell in a car park.

A spokesperson Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a suspicious device at a car park near Brecon at around 9.15am on 29 May 2024.

“Officers attended and liaised with the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) who then attended and successfully detonated the device in a nearby field.”

The MOD confirmed that they discovered a “1 x 2 Inch High Explosive Mortar” and that “due to the age and condition of the item it was safely destroyed in-situ.”

It also revealed “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a suspicious device at a property in Brecon at around 4.30pm on 6 August 2023.

"Officers attended and liaised with the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) who then attended to remove the device.”

Earlier in May the team had a false alarm at a property near Machynlleth.

 A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: “We can confirm an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called out to Corris at the request of North Wales Police.

“A team from 11 EOD&S Regt RLC responded to the call-out in question. The item was Non-Ordnance and left at the scene.”

More recently, in June, they were called out to site at the edge of the county when over 30 commercial detonators were found during garden works.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: “An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called out to Neath at the request of South Wales Police.

“A team from 11 EOD&S Regt RLC responded to the call-out in question. The items, 34 x Commercial (Civilian) Detonators were safely destroyed in-situ.”
