One person is set to leave hospital after a derailment on a Powys heritage railway.

The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway had a “minor derailment” yesterday (September 1) which saw one person injured near the Llanfair station.

The incident, which occurred just before midday, saw the train service suspended for an hour and one member of staff receive medical attention from the railway’s on-site medics.

The incident occurred whilst four members of the team were doing a demonstration run.

A spokesperson for the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway said: “One member of staff received medical attention on the scene. They were subsequently referred to Shrewsbury A&E for treatment and we expect them to be discharged today.

“We immediately informed our two regulatory bodies the RAIB (rail accident investigation branch) and ORR (office of rail and road) of the incident. We have also started our own internal investigation into the incident.

“The incident involved one of our heritage track inspection trollies which was being used for photographic demonstration purposes during our Gala Event.

“There was no damage to railway infrastructure and our passenger trains were unaffected apart from a delay to operations whilst our staff dealt with the incident.

“Our regular steam passenger services will be operating through the rest of September and October as advertised.

“Once again, I would like to thank all our staff on the day who dealt with the incident in a professional and timely manner whilst keeping our visitors informed of the situation.”
