A POWYS man who has been banned from every Asda store in Wales and England will be sentenced for two theft offences later this month.

Jonathan Birchall, 51, stole a mobile phone and other goods from two customers in the Asda store in Llanelwedd, just outside Builth Wells, on July 24, during the busy Royal Welsh Show week period.

Birchall, of Tan Y Castell, Builth, appeared at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 28, where he was told his sentencing would be delayed.

Birchall had previously admitted two counts of theft. He pleaded guilty to entering the Asda petrol forecourt shop and stealing goods from a handbag belonging to Sandra Jones-Morgan, valued at £20

On the same date he admitted he stole a mobile phone belonging to Kelley Powell valued at £280.

Gurleen Kaur, representing Birchall last week, said: “The case was adjourned previously for a pre-sentence report, having pleaded guilty, but he may be eligible for a new mental health treatment initiative.

“Further assessment is needed. He has been going through a bad period of mental health, with the loss of his mother, alcohol issues and PTSD relating to childhood.”

Magistrates told Birchall to return to court on September 25. His conditional bail – which says he must not enter any Asda store in Wales or England – is to continue.
