Welshpool Rotary has thanked people who have donated bras to their campaign as the first batch has been collected from Morrisons.

Having launched a campaign alongside Welshpool’s branch of Morrisons earlier this summer, the Rotary club have collected their first batch from the bra bank bins placed in the supermarket.

A spokesperson for Welshpool Rotary said: “The Welshpool Rotary has collected its first unloved, ill-fitting or unwanted bras from the Morrisons supermarket so thank you ladies.

“Inside the supermarket entrance you will find the pink Against Breast Cancer Bra Bank bin where bras can be deposited.

“It does not matter what condition the bra is in - we still want it but laundered is good please.

“This initiative keeps these valuable textiles out of land fill, helps support the Against Breast Cancer charity in the UK and helps families in Africa.”

The campaign was set up to benefit the Against Breast Cancer charity in the UK, teaming up with a recycling company who are donating £700 to cancer research for every tonne of bras collected.

The bras themselves get sorted and baled to start a new life in countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where the bales are bought by women who support their families by selling the bras in markets. With new bras being very expensive, the initiative gives people access to affordable bars in town markets.

The initiative also keeps these valuable textiles out of landfills, making it environmentally friendly as well.
