Free access to more than 200 historic Welsh landmarks is available throughout September thanks to Cadw’s annual Open Doors Festival.

The Open Doors festival not only offers entry to some of Wales' most revered historical sites, but it also marks Cadw's 40th-anniversary celebrations.

Locations from castles to churches and ancient burial chambers, including Dylan Thomas’ Boat house, are participating in this historical showcase.

Visitor favourites, such as Powis Castle and Gardens, Denbigh Castle, Segontium Roman Fort, Harlech Castle and Strata Florida Abbey, will be open free of charge.

The festival is part of a wider European Heritage Day celebration, aimed at showcasing the cultural diversity Europe offers.

This opportunity allows people of all ages to connect with history, embrace Wales' vibrant heritage, and uncover the fascinating tales that have defined the nation.

Ffion Reynolds, Cadw’s heritage and events manager, said: "Open Doors is a chance for us to celebrate the diversity and resilience of Wales’ historic architecture in a way that’s accessible to all.

"By offering free access to these locations, we hope everyone will have the opportunity to experience the depth of our country’s history and culture and play a role in preserving these places for future generations.

"This year also marks a significant milestone for Cadw as it marks its 40th anniversary; it’s great to host the festival as part of the wider celebrations throughout the year."

The list of participating locations and events includes Powis Castle and Gardens, Welshpool, which opens for free for only the second time on September 14 from 10am to 5pm.

The Abercamlais House and Gardens, Brecon, a Grade 1 listed building dating from the Middle Ages, will open its doors on September 14 and 15 from 12pm to 4pm.

An insider's tour of the Powys Archives in Llandrindod Wells will be offered on September 22 from 10am to 1pm, allowing access to a range of items, including Victorian Christmas Cards and photographic albums dating back to the 14th century. Llanfyllin Warehouse is also involved in the scheme.
