A COMMUNITY group has lambasted the “complete disregard” shown for heritage in Llandrindod Wells, following vandalism at the Rock Park Spa & Heritage Centre.

The venue was hit sometime earlier this month, with graffiti sprayed all over the walls of the centre, located in Rock Park.

Obscenities and crude drawings mark the building, with those responsible criticised by the Llandrindod Wells Spa Town Trust, which operates the centre and café.

“It is very sad to see the complete disregard for heritage, when vandalism like this occurs,” said a spokesperson for the trust.

“As we are a charity and not always at the venue, members of the community had alerted us to it, so we could report this to the police.”

The vandalism happened sometime before August 10, with some messages left unclear as to whether there was a racist element to them.

Images of the damage were posted to the Llandrindod Solutions Facebook page, with scores of angry comments left.

One local resident said he would donate CCTV equipment to the centre in order to prevent further vandalism in the future.

“We do not believe that this was racially motivated; it seems to be young people not understanding the implications of those actions,” added the Spa Town Trust spokesperson.

“August being one of our busiest months this year, (this) has already impacted (us), which is understandable as I would also not want to organise a toddler’s event, for example, starring at these obscenities.

“We would like to thank the local community for their support and always keeping an eye out for us, this is truly appreciated.”

The trust said it had informed Dyfed Powys Police of the damage but the force was only able to provide a reference number.

The Rock Park holds significance historically for Llandrindod. Originally set out in the 1860s to cater for the flourishing spa trade, the Rock Park today provides twelve acres of mature woodland with plenty to see and do for visitors, who can discover the Chalybeate Spring and sample the waters.

Many of the Victorian Spa buildings remain, including the original pump room. The park includes three international standard bowling greens, while the spa buildings house the Rock Park Complementary Health Centre and the Rock Park Cafe.

Vandalism appears to be endemic in Llandrindod of late, with the public toilets in Station Crescent hit yet again in recent days.

Faeces were spread over the walls of the toilets, near the train station, only days after repairs totalling £4,000 were completed; the toilets have previously been damaged by vandals earlier this year.
