WORK to turn a disused tourist information centre into a “thriving” community building is underway, after funding was secured.

Builth Wells Community Support (BWCS) submitted a grant application to the National Lottery Community Fund and announced this week that had been successful.

BWCS took on the former building, which is located centrally on The Groe car park and was originally built as a tourist information centre (TIC), in June.

The building, situated adjacent to the town’s main car park and public toilets, closed in its original guise many years ago, but is now set to be opened up for use by various organisations and groups within the town.

OTHER NEWS:

“We are so excited to announce that our grant application to the National Lottery Community Fund has been successful and work is now starting to transform the old TIC building on The Groe into a thriving community building,” said BWCS on its Facebook page.

“We plan to be open in September as some groups need to move from Wesley, however, not all the refurbishments will be completed.

“We already have lots of interest from organisations and groups who want to use the building and look forward to working with them to bring services and information into our community.

“We are still trying to decide on the best name for this building, so more suggestions please.”

The refurbished building will be available for groups to use for regular or occasional sessions. Community support will also be running drop-in sessions for anyone to call in and have a chat.

BWCS has been calling on the local community to come up with a name for the new building.

“We hope this will become a valuable asset to the community – but it needs a name,” they said in the original post.

“We would prefer not ‘hub’ or ‘hive’ as there are so many of them, so please have a think and either email suggestions or comment on this post – please be polite and helpful.”

Many suggestions have since poured in, including Here 4 You, Helping Hands, Help, Meet and Chat Centre, Gro Together, Calon Cymuned (Heart of the Community), Builth Connect, Heart of Builth and Builth Community Centre.
