A medic from Welshpool is set to take on the Ironman Wales challenge, taking on a whopping 140.6 miles.

Simon Cartwright, a critical care practitioner, decided to participate in this gruelling long-distance triathlon to raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.

The triathlon course consists of a 2.4-mile sea swim, a 112-mile bike ride along hilly terrain and a marathon through Tenby streets.

Mr Cartwright along with his medical team colleagues, Caroline Arter, Ruby Thomas, and Mike Palmer will also raise money for this lifesaving cause by taking part.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supply the NHS staff who work on the Air Ambulance service in Wales.

Hospital-standard treatments can be taken directly to patients through the consultant-led Wales Air Ambulance Service.

It also makes sure that patients are transferred to the right hospital for their respective illnesses or injuries.

A significant amount of time can be saved compared to traditional care which supports survival and recovery.

Working from the Welshpool base since March 2022, Mr Cartwright is looking forward to being a part of the 'Wales Air Ambulance Ironman Team' with his colleagues.

Despite their busy schedules and long shifts, they find time for their training to take on this challenge.

Mr Cartwright shared how it will be his first Ironman competition, an idea proposed by his colleague Caz.

He said: "I think it’s always good attitude to say ‘yes’, especially to something that you’ve never done before.

"Completing an Ironman whilst supporting the Charity and doing it with other Critical Care Practitioners, Caz, Mike and Ruby is pretty awesome."

Mr Cartwright has previously participated in the Always Aim High Triathlons series in North Wales, which includes the Snowman, Sandman, and Slateman over the last two years.

Mr Cartwright added: "I’m nervous and excited to be doing the Ironman Wales.

"It’s going to be great to see everyone achieving what they have been training for.

"We’re looking forward to the support from the crowds and raising as much money as possible.

"Thank you for all the donations so far."

Wales Air Ambulance chief executive, Dr Sue Barnes. said: "We were delighted to hear that Simon and the team will be taking on Ironman Wales in aid of our all-Wales cause.

"The fact that outside of their day job of saving lives they want to raise money for our cause is incredible.

"The dedication they give to their roles as Critical Care Practitioners daily is incredible, but to go on and push themselves to complete a gruelling fundraiser is so heartwarming.

"The Charity is proud of them all.

"We wish Simon and all the team the best as they take on this huge challenge and we hope our supporters get behind the team on the day."
