A POWYS police officer is awaiting the results of a hepatitis test after a man he arrested spat in his face.
Michael Evans spat directly in the officer's eye after police officers were called to an incident at a caravan park on July 26.
Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court heard this week that Evans, 41, was arrested at a caravan park near Doldowlod, between Rhayader and Newbridge-on-Wye.
Prosecutor Helen Tench told court on Wednesday, August 14, that the spitting incident occurred as officers were trying to put Evans into a police vehicle.
“He was in custody, in a caged vehicle, officers tried getting him in,” said Mrs Tench.
“The defendant threatened to spit in the officer’s face, which he then did. He spat in his eye, and he had to sit there with it closed for a while.
“He later went to hospital and had to have a blood test. The defendant potentially has hepatitis so it’s been a very anxious time for the officer.”
Evans, of Gwynfa, Lant Avenue, Llandrindod, admitted one charge of assaulting an emergency worker on Wednesday.
Jack Yelland, representing him, said a report would be needed and that Evans had alcohol and mental health-related issues.
Magistrates adjourned sentencing for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and told Evans to return to court on September 11.
His conditional bail, which states he is not to be drunk in a public place, was extended.
