A POWYS man left threatening messages on the answering machine at his mother’s home.

Alexander Day, 31, was described as having had a long history of mental illness when he admitted one charge of sending a communication conveying a threatening message at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 13.

The court heard that on January 20 this year, Day, from Newtown, left a series of voicenotes on the phone of Alisdair Moore, his stepfather, making threats toward his mum.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said Mr Moore checked his landline voicemail at around 1pm on January 20 and discovered several messages from Day.

OTHER NEWS:

“He recognised the defendant’s voice, with around seven messages left in the early hours of that morning,” said Mrs Tench.

“He said he felt in fear of the defendant, he fears he will attend their address and he is concerned due to his unstable mental health.”

Mrs Tench read out a sample of messages left by the defendant.

“There were further messages along these lines,” said Mrs Tench.

Day was arrested in February and given bail to return to the police station.

“In interview he said to police it was his attention to upset her (his mum) and hurt her physically,” added Mrs Tench.

“He said he couldn’t remember making the threats but he didn’t deny making them.”

Geraint Parry, representing Day, of Severnside Cottages, Llanllwchaiarn Road, Newtown, said: “This is not a pleasant incident. He has a long history of mental health, sadly, and has since received help.

County Times:

“He is better now, but I feel a full pre-sentence report is needed.”

Magistrates ordered a report and adjourned sentencing until September 3, when Day will return to court.

In the meantime, his conditional bail remains in place. He must not contact his mum or stepdad and must not enter the Bryn y Ddol area of Welshpool.
