A PUBLIC meeting is being held next week in a bid to safeguard the future of a vital community post office in a rural Powys village.

As it stands, Llangammarch Wells Post Office & Shop will be shutting next February, after Marion Roff announced she will be retiring, having served the village as postmistress for the last quarter-of-a-century.

“The village post office and shop will close its doors for the final time on Friday, February 28, 2025,” Marion announced recently in posters that have appeared in the village and been circulated on online.

“I have now decided that the time is right to close the business after 25 years of serving the community. Jenny will also be taking retirement in February of next year.

“I would like to thank my valued customers for their support over the years.”

OTHER NEWS:

As yet, no buyer has been found so that the business can remain open for people living in the village, situated between Builth Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells.

This had led to locals exploring possibilities as Marion prepares to shut up shop. It is hoped buying the premises might be possible, though it is thought that they will need to find £275,000 to do so.

A community meeting is being held at Llangammarch’s Alexandra Hall next Friday, August 16, at 6pm, regarding the forthcoming closure.

“After many years of faithful service to our community Marion will be retiring in February 2025, while Jenny will retire at the same time,” said Kay Coldrick, representing Llangammarch Community Council.

“Sadly, so far, no buyer has been secured for the business. The meeting will aim to find out the extent of (what) the impact of the closure will be on local people.

“(We will) see if there are any possibilities by which the community might be able to run the post office and shop, explore ideas regarding how funds might be raised for its purchase (it is thought £275,000 will be needed, and to see how the business might run going forwards if the community were successful in retaining the post office and shop.

“We hope as many local people as possible will come along and express their views.”
