A search and rescue team who regularly save people in Powys are fundraising for “essential gear”.

Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team (ASART), a volunteer-based organisation dedicated to saving lives in mid-Wales, the breathtaking and the southern reaches of Eryri National Park has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £25,000 for crucial waterproof gear.

The campaign, set to run the rest of this year, aims to purchase essential kit including all season waterproof jackets and trousers for team members.

"It is essential that team members are equipped to head out onto the mountain in all weathers," said Jemma Barratt, Press Officer of Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team.

“As seen in Episode 6 of BBC SOS Extreme Rescue, the team can be out for several hours in horrendous conditions to help extremely unwell casualties.

“Our current waterproofs are not always suitable, especially in the warmer summer months when we are often out on the hill in wet weather conditions. We hope this campaign can help us purchase this essential kit so we can continue to be there when people need us most."

Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team, responded to 53 callouts totalling 1266 volunteer hours in 2023 alone. These rescues involved a diverse range of individuals, from local dog walkers, school groups on DoE, and international tourists, to mountain bikers, hikers and climbers.

In 2024, the Aberdyfi team has already been called out 20 times and their busiest season hasn’t even begun.

The team, which is 100% volunteer-run, relies entirely on donations and receives no direct government funding.
