THE funeral of a young father who died in a motocross accident will take place next week.

Duncan Powell, a married father of three from Knucklas, near Knighton, died days before his 36th birthday. Mr Powell died following what his family called a “freak accident” at a motocross track near Penybont on Sunday, July 28.

Tributes flooded in to Mr Powell from throughout Powys following the news of his death, which was confirmed by Mid Wales Motocross, organisers of the Penybont event, on Monday, July 29.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 17, with details shared on Mr Powell’s Facebook page this week.

“Duncan's life will be celebrated at Knighton Community Centre on Saturday, 17th August 2024, at 3pm,” read a post.

“Tamsin & family are asking for anyone who has access to a motorbike or quad to meet at their family home in Knucklas at 2pm, to follow Duncan to Knighton.

“Please wear colour. Instead of flowers, donations to the Welsh Air Ambulance would be appreciated.”

Those who knew him best described Mr Powell as a “great person, kind, funny and someone who would help anybody”. He was renowned for being a talented mechanic and motocross rider.

Adam Dance, who had known him for more than 20 years, said: “When you move to place where you don't know a soul and this lad welcomes you with open arms, you know he's special.

“An absolute pleasure to have known you and call you a friend. Kindness to the core.”

Benjamin Caine said: “Duncan, you really were the best of us, a true legend. I really can’t find the words, just doesn’t feel real.”

Danny Shiers, a work colleague of Mr Powell’s, wrote: “A true gentleman. Absolutely gutted for his family and close friends and the (motocross) world.

“As everyone has said he made everyone smile and left a lasting impression on you, once met never forgotten.”

His family described him as having a “smile that went from ear to ear” and they made it clear that no-one was to blame for his death.

They said he died in a freak accident doing a sport he had loved since he was a child.

“Duncan was always happy, with a smile that went from ear to ear,” they said in a statement.

“(He was) a very hard-working young man who would help out anybody. He had a motocross accident on his bike, doing the sport he loved from a young age.

“(We) would also like to mention that it was a freak accident and was nobody’s fault.”

The Wales Air Ambulance sent two helicopters to the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 10.30am on Sunday, July 28.
