TRIBUTES have flooded in from friends after a young Powys father died in a motocross accident.

Duncan Powell, 35, died following what his family called a “freak accident” at a motocross track near Penybont on Sunday, July 28. Two Wales Air Ambulances attended the scene, with event organisers Mid Wales Motocross confirming Mr Powell’s death in a post on their Facebook page on Monday.

Mr Powell, from Knucklas, was a married father of three children. Those who knew him best have described him as a great person, kind, funny and someone who would help anybody. He was renowned for being a talented mechanic and motocross rider.

Adam Dance, who had known him for more than 20 years, paid tribute to his friend on Mr Powell’s Facebook page. He said: “When you move to place where you don't know a soul and this lad welcomes you with open arms, you know he's special.

“An absolute pleasure to have known you and call you a friend. Kindness to the core. Heartbroken. RIP old mate.”

Mr Dance added: “I have known Duncan for 20+ years, we met through the Shobdon Motorcross Club.

“He was a great person, really kind, funny and would not hesitate to help anybody out. A very talented mechanic and Motocross rider. He will be missed dearly.”

Benjamin Caine said of Mr Powell: “Duncan, you really were the best of us, a true legend. I really can’t find the words, just doesn’t feel real.

“Rest in peace. Sending all the love in the world to your family.”

Danny Shiers, a work colleague of Mr Powell’s, wrote: “A true gentleman. I worked with Dunc for the last 5 years and we had a common interest with the motocross side.

“Absolutely gutted for his family and close friends and the (motocross) world. As everyone has said he made everyone smile and left a lasting impression on you, once met never forgotten.

“I'm sure in time his family will read these and understand he was a true legend to anyone he met. RIP Duncan Powell and sincere condolences to his loved ones.”

Professional Irish motocross rider Stuart Edmonds was one of many people to leave a message on Facebook. He said: “Sorry to hear this and sending my condolences to Duncan’s family and friends.”

Matty Evans described Mr Powell as “one of the nicest, happy go lucky lads I’ve ever met”, while Gareth Edwards said: “He was a lovely chap and hard worker in the Shobdon club as well as a fantastic (motocross) rider.”

Baz Lewis said Mr Powell’s “smiling face will be missed from the paddock.”

His family described him as having a “smile that went from ear to ear” and they made it clear that no-one was to blame for his death.

The Wales Air Ambulance confirmed it sent two helicopters to the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 10.30am on Sunday at Penybont.

An inquest into Mr Powell's death opened on Thursday, August 1.
