An influential Powys farmer has been praised by Wales' largest youth organisation for his "incredible" work leading a group of talented young people at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Tom Jones, from Dolanog near Llanfair Caereinion, guided Urdd members and competitors who took part in Urdd Eisteddfod public speaking competition to explore the Belgian capital, learn about its rich culture, and engage with the European institutions.

The purpose of the trip was to continue the Urdd’s partnership with Brussels, while deepening young people’s understanding of governance and the relationship between Wales and the European Union (EU).

During their visit, the group toured the European Parliament and attended a meeting at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

One group member said, "Listening to people speaking their mother tongue in a meeting and people from across Europe was an eye-opener.”

Another added: "Being on the trip taught me that my career can go in any direction, I must be open to any career."

The group was given the opportunity to meet civil servants, including some from Wales - one of which was also a Welsh speaker - and hold a discussion with the FAA was one of the trip's highlights for some.

Lois Drake, Assistant International Officer at Urdd Gobaith Cymru, said: “What Tom Jones has done is incredible. He has given young people from Wales a glimpse of life in Brussels and the kind of work done there.

“Even after leaving the EU, it was interesting to see how much presence the UK and Wales still have there and the discussions they continue to be involved in.

“Seeing how influential Tom Jones is there, and how many people he knew, was amazing. He has truly left a positive impression of Wales in the minds of people there.

“The skills they learned during this experience can now be integrated into their roles within the Urdd and help them continue to improve their public speaking skills.

“This unforgettable opportunity was made possible thanks to Tom Jones' generous donations and the support of Taith.”
