A petrol station in Welshpool that is home to the town's Subway branch recently received a one-star food hygiene rating by an inspector.
The management's “poor appreciation of hazards” and “no food safety measures” was cited in a report by food hygiene inspectors as two of the reasons behind the low rating at Subway and Applegreen petrol station in Salop Road.
The inspection, carried out in April, was critical of both the Subway outlet and the garage shop, identifying health hazards in the business and failures in management, such as noting that it was “obvious” stock checks were not being properly carried out.
It noticed several out-of-date food items in the shop, as well as hygiene issues at Subway.
The report noted that there was a “significantly varying record of compliance” by the branch’s management and control procedures.

In the report, the food hygiene inspector said: “There was a poor appreciation of hazards and control measures. No food safety management procedures. Some reluctance in recognising or accepting the need for food safety and hygiene control procedures.
“During my visit, the stock checks for the 13/04/2024 and 14/03/2024 had been completed, yet during my visit a quantity of food with these dates was found past their Use By Date. It is obvious staff are not carrying out the stock checks thoroughly.”
The inspector also raised minor issues with hygiene throughout the business, from equipment that was not properly disinfected to a damaged floor in need of a deep clean.
The report added: “It is essential that you thoroughly clean and disinfect your probe thermometer before each use to ensure it does not become a vehicle of bacterial contamination. At the time of my inspection, there were no probe wipes.

“The floor throughout the Subway section requires a deep clean, paying particular attention to the perimeters around the floor and under equipment. There are several cracked tiles in the Subway servery. There are several cracked floor tiles in the entrance of the shop. Replace the damaged tiles to leave in a cleanable condition.
“The white plastic chopping boards on the servery of the Subway were stained and heavily scored. The boards cannot be easily cleaned.”
