An exhausted 20-year-old horse had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming stuck in a muddy bog.

The Brecon Fire Station crew and Pontardawe Fire Station's Animal Rescue Team were called to the incident in Libanus, near Brecon at 12pm on Sunday, July 14.

Crews raced to the scene to help the horse, measuring approximately 17 hands, which was stuck in around four feet of mud in a field.

OTHER NEWS:

Rescue teams realised that one of the main issues was that one of the horse’s back legs had become stuck by suction deep in the bog and the horse had become exhausted trying to free itself.

Both the Animal Rescue Team and Brecon fire crew came up with a plan that saw them using salvage sheets, one slide mat, strops and shovels.

Eventually, through working together, the crews were able to rescue the horse, which was then put in the care of its owner and veterinarians who were also in attendance. Crews left the field at 2.10pm.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service currently has specialist Animal Rescue Teams based at Machynlleth, Rhayader, Pontardawe and Carmarthen fire stations, who use a variety of specialist animal rescue equipment.
