A community farm in Powys has been awarded a coveted Green Flag title marking it out as a quality green space.

Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners which include Dolydd Gobaith, near Llanfyllin.

The 32-acre community farm and nature reserve in Pen-y-garnedd was set up as a community interest company in September 2020, raising money to buy the land.

It aims to increase biodiversity on the land and carbon capture, sustainably produce food and other products, teach land-based skills, and involve local communities.

In a statement the CIC said: "Being awarded a Green Flag is a huge boost to our wonderful hard-working volunteers.

OTHER NEWS:

"It means a great deal to be recognised by an external organisation and the award will hopefully spread the word about our project beyond our local communities."

"Dolydd Gobaith has been in existence for over three years now. In that time dozens of local people (and a few from further away) have helped plant trees on the site, been involved in wildlife surveys, built a roundhouse shelter and enjoyed many cups of tea and slices of cake.

"There is a great of sense of camaraderie at our work sessions and new friendships have been forged.

"Our workshops in land-based skills have been well-attended and have given participants confidence in helping to maintain the land at Dolydd Gobaith and also their own land and gardens. As word gets around that the farm is open to all, we are seeing more and more people coming here to walk, take photographs, watch birds and sit by the wildlife ponds."

199 community managed green spaces across the country have received the Green Flag Community Award.

Now in its third decade, Green Flag recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said: “We’re thrilled to see a new record number of 199 community managed green spaces in Wales have achieved Green Flag status, which is testament to the dedication and hard work of hundreds of volunteers.

“These sites, which play a vital role in the physical and mental well-being of communities across Wales, are now recognised as among the best in the world, having met the high standards required to achieved Green Flag Community status. Congratulations!”
