New funding is set to help St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers in Powys continue to save lives in the community.

The £35,000 donation comes from Knighton Hospital and Community League of Friends.

This money is set to support the creation of the group of Volunteer Alternative Responder Team in the Knighton community, funding vehicles and essential medical equipment.

It will be run by St John Ambulance Cymru, working in partnership with the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust to provide lifesaving care when its needed.

The trained volunteers will be on standby, just a call away.

They'll respond to emergencies happening within the community, by providing care in the moments that matter, before an ambulance can get to the scene.

This new move to bring in its Volunteer Responder scheme in Powys follows St John’s successful implementation in other communities across Wales.

Complimenting the NHS, the first aid charity aims to ensure that those in dire need of emergency help get it promptly.

Knighton Hospital and Community League of Friends are committed to supporting patients and former patients of Knighton Hospital and other community members who are sick or in need.

The much-needed boost of St John Ambulance Cymru’s Volunteer Alternative Responder service will play an important role in acting as a lifeline for people who are unwell or hurt in the area.

Darren Murray, head of community operations at St John Ambulance Cymru said: "We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone at the Knighton Hospital and Community League of Friends for their support.

"This generous donation will support the establishment of a service which has proven invaluable in rural communities across Wales, delivering urgent care and saving lives.

"This initiative will allow our volunteers to further support the people of Knighton and reduce patient waiting times in an emergency."

St John Ambulance Cymru is dedicated to improving health and wellbeing in communities across Wales.

The Volunteer Alternative Responder scheme is part of a broader scheme towards achieving this goal.

The charity is looking forward to seeing the positive impact that the service will have on the health and wellbeing of people in the Knighton area.
