A parliamentary candidate for Mid Wales says she suffered racist abuse in the days leading up to the election.

Amerjit Kaur-Dhaliwal, Green Party candidate for MP of the Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe Constituency, said she suffered was racially abused during her campaign.

She says she was also yelled at for being "woke" on polling day itself.

The first occurred at the Barley Mow pub in Builth Wells on June 29, after she had attended a hustings in Presteigne.

She said: “He kicked off at 1.30am, telling me to ‘get out of this country’, then looked at me and said, ‘you can go back to wherever you come from’.

“He got more and more angry. His mate had to hold him back and it then spilled outside. I was in shock. I don’t know who he is but it’s sad to happen in our communities.

“It’s happening at a time when people feel emboldened to say these things because of the political rhetoric they’re hearing on a national level.

“I think it’s really important to call it out, as where there’s racism it’s marginalised communities that will see and suffer it first hand.

“I’d like to thank the police for the support I was offered. I was sceptical over whether anything would come from me reporting the incident but I was very pleased with the resources for feedback and support.”

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that the incident was reported to them, adding that they are investigating the allegation of verbal racial abuse, with enquiries ongoing to identify the offender.

Ms Kaur-Dhaliwal also described another confrontation, that took place a few days later on July 4 at a Builth Wells polling station in Strand Hall.

She said: “A man saw my Green badge and just hurled abuse at me about being ‘woke’ and ‘living in a dream world’. I know a friend of his and at first I thought he was joking. It’s sad to see.

“I’m always happy to talk to people who disagree and have an open dialogue, but a confrontation should never be happening at a polling station, where people are there to cast their vote and shouldn’t be intimidated."

The Barley Mow pub was approached for comment.
