The mayor of Llanfyllin has outlined some of the key aims of the town’s five-year placemaking plan to try and improve footfall in the area.
Cllr Peter Lewis went through the now finalised placemaking plan for Llanfyllin, put together after a lengthy consultation process with the people of the town, for how to improve the town square and increase visitors to the Powys town.
Goals included a facelift to the town, adding up to 40 extra parking spaces and make Llanfyllin a “centre of excellence for the cycling community”.
In a video for Powys County Council, Cllr Lewis explained: “The first part we’re doing is to do up the town square, for which we will hopefully move the war memorial and make this more like a cosmopolitan, cafeteria sort of area to encourage people to stay and also have market stalls on the Thursday’s market and if we can go to Saturday as well to have a market day.
“We want to make Llanfyllin a centre of excellence for the cycling community. We have Revolution Bike Park in Llangynog just opening again. We have the pump track and we’re doing a project in Ysgol Llanfyllin as well.”

In 2023 Powys County Council appointed Owen Davies Consulting to work with local stakeholders, the town council and the business community to complete a Placemaking Plan, inviting the community to provide their own ideas for a five year plan to improve the town centre.
Cllr Lewis added: “I was very impressed by how many members of the public came to the open evenings in the Institute. It was a fantastic turnout. They were giving their ideas of what they want. It was a good process and hopefully we’ve come to what everybody thinks we need.

“We won’t please everybody but we’ve done the main things everybody wanted and what we’ve put forward since then, showing the plan and what the ideas are, everyone’s been very pleased with.
“It’s very important to engage with the public. It’s their town. This is what they want and all the local people want the town to be busy.
"They love to see busy town. This is a process to keep bringing Llanfyllin into the fore and make it busy.”
