A main road between Newtown and Welshpool has reopened today (Friday, July 5) after work was completed to fix a burst water pipe.

The A483 between Abermule and Nags Head in Garthmyl had been closed since Thursday morning (July 4) which caused traffic disruption in the area with vehicles being diverted to surrounding villages.

Hafren Dyfrdwy apologised for causing disruption.

Traffic lights will remain up on the one side of the road at Fron before heavy loads can pass over. The traffic lights will be removed from site and the road re-opened fully on Saturday morning.

Emergency repairs have involved digging down to the broken pipe, which was encased in concrete, and then laying new tarmac which needed time to set for motorists to use.

In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, a Hafren Dyfrdwy spokesperson said: "Thanks for everyone's patience as we completed emergency repairs on the A483 this morning.

"We've made good progress and we can now reopen the road. There will be two- way traffic lights in place.

"We'd still encourage anyone to plan ahead for their journey, and to follow any diversion to keep traffic flowing.

"We know this is causing local disruption, and we're really sorry about this.

"Please be assured we're doing everything we can to get the road fully open as quickly, and safely as possible."

Hafren Dyfrdwy said its tankers are moving water around the network to help get the water back on for everyone “as soon as possible”.
