The Liberal Democrats have sealed victory in Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe on a dreadful night for the Conservative Party in Wales.

Fay Jones lost her seat after one term in parliament, with the Lib Dems' David Chadwick taking it in her place.

In a tightly contested election, Mr Chadwick edge out Ms Jones by gaining 13,736 votes; Ms Jones was second with 12,264 ballots cast in her favour.

The previous Liberal Democrat to hold the constituency - before its reshaping to as part of a boundary review last year - was Jane Dodds, who had held the Brecon and Radnorshire seat for only a short period before the 2019 election.

And Mr Chadwick, who won by a majority of 1,472, was left celebrating after being elected as the new MP for the restructured constituency. It comes after the county council was also taken over by the Liberal Democrats at the 2022 local election.

The newly elected Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, said: “It’s an absolute privilege to have been elected. I am truly humbled.

“Yesterday, this constituency voted in its droves and when it voted, people voted decisively to reject the sleaze, scandal and neglect of the outgoing Conservative government.

“Decades of mismanagement have damaged the public’s trust in politicians across Wales and across the country.

“I intend to restore that trust across our communities and that starts today.”

Mr Chadwick added: “I would like to thank the people of Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe for placing their trust in me to represent them in parliament.

“I ran on a vow to empower local voices and to champion the interests of our diverse constituency and its communities and I will work tirelessly to ensure we are heard loudly and clearly by those in power in London.”

Ousted former MP Ms Jones said: “I do sincerely congratulate David on winning this seat. It is the very best seat in the country and it has been the honour of my life to represent it.

“Clearly, this is a sad and difficult night for my party and I hope we will take time to reflect wisely, but for now can I say, truly, it was an incredible experience being a Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire and I cannot thank my constituents enough.

“Those who put their faith me and those who didn’t, it was my privilege to serve you.”

Labour's Matthew Dorrance amassed the third most votes, his 9,904 trumped Reform UK candidate Adam Hill (6,567), who only joined the party in March.

Plaid Cymru representative Emily Durrant-Munro, who was not present on the night, gained 2,280, with Green Party member Amerjit Rosie Kaur-Dhaliwal (1,188), Jonathan Harrington, of Abolish (372) and Lady Lily the Pink, of the Monster Raving Loony Party (237) trailing behind.
