The A483 between Abermule and Garthmyl is expected to be closed until at least Friday (July 5) while work continues to fix a burst water pipe.

Hafren Dyfrdwy said it is "taking a little longer" for their team to dig down to the broken pipe at Fron which is encased in concrete.

The water company said its teams are working on site to get the road back open "as quickly as we can".

Drivers have been told to avoid the area, but some roads have been described as "gridlocked" due to the volume of vehicles being diverted through nearby villages.

A picture shared on social media shows water and small debris across the road outside a row of houses in Fron.

In an update shortly before 1.30pm, Hafren Dyfrdwy said: "We’re continuing to work hard fixing the burst water pipe on the A483.

"The teams are digging down to get to the pipe, but as the pipe is encased in concrete, it's taking a little longer for us to get to.

"As soon as our teams get to the pipe that's burst, we have the new pipe on site with all the relevant fittings to go straight in.

"The burst has caused quite a bit of damage to the road and we need to do a lot of digging, so we expect it to be closed at least until tomorrow.

"We’d urge anyone travelling in the area to plan ahead their journey and be prepared to follow the signed diversion in place to help keep traffic flowing as freely as possible.

"As soon as the pipe is safely in, we'll then need to put the road back to normal and make the area safe again - then we can fully open it.

"We will of course, work as quickly, and as safely as we can – we know this is causing a lot of local impact, and we are sorry for this.

"Be assured, it’s our priority to have everything fixed, and back to normal as soon as we can."
