A Welshpool cyclist was among a team of riders who took on the Wales Coast to Coast route on mountain bikes.

Neil Williams, from Welshpool, joined a team of cyclists as they rode 430km across Wales, raising more than £7,000 for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Cymru.

The fundraising project was inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Thom Kerr, a young man who lived with Multiple Sclerosis and volunteered with MS Society Cymru before his passing, described as a “invaluable volunteer” for the charity.

Describing the challenge before setting off, Mr Williams said: “We’re hoping to ride from The North Coast to South coast of Wales, Conwy to Port Talbot, in four days on a Mountain Bike. That’s around 200 miles and 25,000ft of climbing, mainly off road.

OTHER NEWS:

“We are riding in memory of our friend, Thom Kerr, who lost his battle with Multiple Sclerosis at a very young age, last year. Despite struggling with the disease for many years, he volunteered for MS Cymru and was a great help and inspiration to many.

“MS is a progressive disease that affects a huge number of people in many different ways and I have several good friends and work colleagues who are still fighting, so I would appreciate anything you can find to contribute to this very worthy cause.”

Other team members included Team members Dave Hawkes, Darryn Buttrill, Vaughn Buttrill, Ross Langdell, and Shaun Holbrow.

Mr Hawkes added: “This ride was about more than just the physical challenge. Every mile we covered was a tribute to Thom and all those living with MS. The support we received along the way was overwhelming."

The money raised, £7,665 in total,  will directly support MS Society's work in research, support services, and advocacy for people affected by MS in Wales.

Shelley Elgin, Director of MS Society Cymru, added: “Thom's dedication to our cause was truly inspiring. These cyclists have honoured his memory in an incredible way, pushing themselves to the limit to raise awareness and funds for MS research and support."

The ride also received support from Thom’s family in the form of his mother Sue Kerr, father, and sisters.

Ms Kerr said: “Seeing these incredible individuals take on this challenge in Thom's memory is deeply moving. Their effort will make a real difference in the lives of people with MS across Wales."
