Passengers on a Powys rail line have been hit with their second major delay in two days after another incident on the route.

Commuters travelling from Welshpool to Shrewsbury on the morning of Tuesday, July 2, had to cope with a 45-minute delay after a train broke down at Welshpool.

According to Transport for Wales, the delay was the result of an “issue” with a train on test. The train in question was the 07:28 Aberystwyth to Birmingham International, which ended up being delayed at Welshpool for 45-minutes before terminating at Shrewsbury station.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said: “Due to an issue with an earlier train on test, the 07:28 Aberystwyth to Birmingham International was delayed at Welshpool for 45 minutes and then terminated at Shrewsbury.

Rail users took to social media to alert other passengers and share information on the train’s status as it came in.

As one member of the Facebook group Welshpool Rail Users said: “Anyone using the train today expect some big delays. A new 197 train on test has failed between Shrewsbury and Welshpool, blocking the line, the 08.54 is stuck at Welshpool and isn't going anywhere any time soon.”

The break down marks the second incident in a few days between Welshpool and Shrewsbury, as a the line was hit by a disruption on June 28 as a train struck a tree on its early morning service.

According to Transport for Wales the train struck a tree that had fallen between Welshpool and Shrewsbury leading to it needing to be removed just before 9am.
