A NEW cycle and pedestrian bridge across the River Severn in Newtown ready has been successfully put in place.
These impressive drone pictures, courtesy of the County Times Camera Club, capture a giant crane placing the 88-tonne structure in place, on Saturday, June 29.
The new active travel bridge was originally scheduled to be put in its position across the Severn on Thursday, June 27, but was rescheduled due to weather conditions.
The construction firm responsible for the bridge build, JN Bentley, were able to lift the bridge into place on Saturday when weather conditions were calmer.
Matt Perry, Powys County Council’s chief officer, said on Thursday that a temporary exclusion zone around part of the depot and surrounding area would be put in place and managed by marshals to ensure everyone is kept safe.
Local residents, members of the public and others had been asked to remain outside of the zone whilst the bridge is moved into position.
Funded by the Welsh Government with support from Transport for Wales, the steel, open arch structure will span approximately 53 metres and connect the riverside path and communities on the west of the River Severn to Pool Road on the east.
