A giant crane has been erected in Newtown ready to lift the town’s new active travel bridge into place.

With the new cycle and pedestrian bridge across the River Severn in Newtown ready to be put into place, a large crane has been brought in to life the 88-tonne structure.

An image by From Above Drone Photography, submitted to the County Times Camera Club, shows the full height of the crane required to life the bridge, towering above the rest of Newtown.

The bridge was originally scheduled to be put in its position across the Severn on Thursday, June 27, but has been rescheduled due to weather conditions.

With the crane on standby, the construction firm responsible for the bridge build, JN Bentley, are on standby to lift the bridge once weather conditions permit them.

As Matt Perry, Powys County Council’s Chief Officer, said: “The exact timings of the lift will be dependent on the weather conditions on the day.

“During the lifting process, a temporary exclusion zone around part of the depot and surrounding area will be put in place and managed by marshals to ensure everyone is kept safe. Local residents, members of the public and others will be asked to remain outside of the zone whilst the bridge is moved into position.

“Our teams will be visiting affected households and businesses in person to ensure they are aware of arrangements.”

Funded by Welsh Government with support from Transport for Wales, the steel, single span, open arch structure will span approximately 53 metres and connect the riverside path and communities on the west of the River Severn to Pool Road on the east.
