The news that the Conservative Party no longer supports Craig Williams is set to impact on the Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr sear in the upcoming General Election.

News broke this morning that the Conservative Party have withdrawn support for Mr Williams,  who has served as MP in Montgomeryshire for the last five years.

It comes after a Gambling Commission was launched into an alleged bet he made on the date of the election while he was working as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

What does this mean?

The withdrawal of support means that there is no official Conservative candidate in Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.

However as of this moment Mr Williams is still a candidate in the election set to take place next Thursday (July 4). As such he will be on the ballot but will be an independent candidate.

He may end up being on the ballot labelled as a Conservative candidate but will have no official backing from the party.

A similar situation arose in the Rochdale by-election earlier this year which saw George Galloway elected as MP.

Azhar Ali, the Labour candidate, lost support of the Labour party in that election after comment about the Israel-Gaza conflict and was effectively an independent but was listed on the ballot as a Labour candidate.

How do the polls currently look?

As of the latest YouGov poll for the constituency, which came out early last week, Mr Williams still had the lead in the constituency.

However he was not far ahead of Labour, who were three points behind, whilst reform were third and seven points behind.

The real question now is if the latest development will change the minds of voters.
