The weather proved to be unusually perfect for Welshpool’s Caribbean themed carnival, with plenty of sunshine to suit the tropical theme running through the event.

Energy in the town centre was definitely alive and buzzing ahead of the parade, even if a somewhat delayed start led to some confusion.

The slightly staggered start also led to a gap between a few marchers and floats.

But as the first few floats disappeared down the street - "was that it?" was on punter's question - more, including a lovely parade of classic cars from the Mid Wales Classic Vehicle Club, made for a colourful spectacle which was lovely to see up close.

OTHER NEWS:

The Caribbean theme made for nice set dressing, but the carnival was good enough on its own to stand up without it. That means there’s still room for anyone to casually turn up or attend the carnival without having to meet a specific theme, keeping it open and accessible to everyone.

On the other hand though, it makes you wonder why there was such a specific theme when for the most part it seemed to be a regular carnival.

At the end of the day I think the theme was more for the floats and people taking part than the visitors, which meant that the Caribbean flavour was confined to the event itself - but the good atmosphere and smiling faces showed that didn't matter too much.

After all it gives a nice focus for the people and groups kind enough to volunteer their time to put floats and stalls together for the event.

The level of participation from Welshpool Town Council was good to see as well. Not just in organising the event but in its presence on the field as people could take part in quick surveys on improving the town, the work the council could be doing and see the proposed plans for the town hall renovation up close.

There was also plenty to do in the carnival’s main arena itself. A steady stream of performances, a variety of stalls and activities, as well as open spaces to just relax in the sun.

Well done to everyone involved in the carnival, and let's look forward to another great event next year!
