Welshpool’s annual carnival saw a range of floats, stalls and attractions drawing crowds to the Powys town on a bright summer day.
Putting a Caribbean twist on their usual annual carnival, the town council organised event started at one end of the town and finished in another on Sunday, June 28.
The carnival’s parade set off slightly later than its planned 12pm start from the Quarry garage on Brook Street before travelling down a straight route to Maes-y-dre Recreation Ground. The route had been changed from an earlier path after health and safety concerns were raised with the proposed route.

The parade featured several floats from organisations within Welshpool and a convoy of classic cars from the Mid Wales Classic Vehicle Club, making its way through the town centre to the arena for the rest of the event that ran from 1pm to 5pm.
The central arena at Maes-y-dre played host to a wide variety of stalls and performances. Some of the other attractions included a nine-hole miniature golf course, a dog and duck show, a funfair and a falconer.
Town councillor and former mayor Nick Howells was on hand to help with the carnival’s PA system, which was highlighted in organising meetings leading up to the event as a particular area to improve on for 2024.
Events, planning, and market officer Kimberly Wright said at the event: “The day has gone really well and we’ve had plenty of good feedback so far. The weather has been brilliant for it so, so far so good.
“It’s really good to see it all come together after so much planning has gone into it. It takes a lot of time to plan an event like this so it’s really nice to see it all realised. It’s also fantastic for the community to see so many people out today enjoying the carnival.
“The parade was great. I think there’s a few issues with the start line at the quarry itself which we’ll have to iron out at our debrief. But other than that the parade was pretty straightforward and we had a good turnout with really great crowds.
“There’s already plans for next year. We just want it to be bigger and better with even more people joining in.”
