Organisers of one of the longest running carnivals in Wales have quashed rumours that this year’s event will be its last.

Preparations are well underway for a week-long spectacle in Rhayader which will culminate with the 120th carnival on Saturday, July 20.

With five weeks until the start of carnival week, organisers have confirmed that there will “always be a carnival in Rhayader” amid rumours that its future is under threat.

In a statement posted on the Rhayader Carnival Week page on Facebook on Sunday, June 9, organisers said: “We have been made aware of a few rumours doing the rounds!

“As a committee we would like to confirm that this will not be the last year for Rhayader Carnival!

“This is the 120th Carnival and providing we continue to have support not just financial but attendance/support at events and on carnival day itself there will always be a carnival in Rhayader!

“We will see you all at the start of Carnival Week in five weeks and at Rhayader Carnival Day on July 20th!”

Earlier this year, Rhayader Carnival organisers revealed that they were facing a shortfall for this summer’s event after one of its major supporters had pulled its funding.

But to keep the much-loved tradition running for future generations, a bingo evening and lucky square draws were held which organisers announced in April had exceeded their fundraising target.
