People were out in full force to celebrate the return of Newtown carnival after a five year hiatus.

Floats, a funfair and attractions were all on full display for the 2024 Newtown carnival, the first carnival to be held in the town for five years since the event was cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After several years of efforts to get the summer event up and running again, the carnival was back in Newtown for Saturday, June 8.

Before its cancellation as a result of the pandemic, the carnival had been a staple of Mid Wales’ largest town, being an annual event that was held uninterrupted for 136 years.

Chair of the carnival committee, Jen Reynolds, was pleased with how the event had gone for its long awaited return.

She said: “There was a lot of pressure to put on a good show, being the first carnival to be held in the town for five years now.

“People definitely turned up for the event, it seemed very welcome after so many years away. We’ve seen some fantastic entertainment, which started with a very good parade that featured 12 floats.

“We’ve seen lots of enthusiasm and I’ve been told by several people at the carnival that they’ve been having a fantastic time.

“Coming over the bridge to see all this laid out is such a wonderful sight, and one I was worried we wouldn’t see again for a few years as we tried to bring the festival back.

“It brings out such a wonderful sense of community, with so much support even after all the hard work to put it together.”
