William Hague has defended Rishi Sunak’s commitment to honour D-day veterans.

The former leader for the Conservative party was in Newtown today, to campaign with Montgomeryshire candidate Craig Williams and both addressed the controversy over the D-day commemoration yesterday.

The Prime Minister came under fire today for missing an event with other world leaders, instead having foreign secretary and former Prime Minister Lord Cameron attend in his place while he returned to the UK to carry out an interview with ITV.

“Well he actually went to about two days of events and attended all the events with the British veterans,” said Lord Hague.

“He has taken that extremely seriously, as he should. Then there is an argument about whether he should be at the international part as well and I think he is about to release a statement on that.”

Mr Williams added that not attending was an error of judgement but stressed that the Prime Minister had attended every event that involved a British veteran.

“He said this morning it was probably the wrong judgement to leave the international part of the commemoration,” said Mr Williams.

“But I think it is important to be absolutely clear that he was there.

“We have the G7 coming up and other events where he will see world leaders.

“He’s right to apologise because he should have stayed but when there was British veteran there – he was there.”
