Concerns have been raised about a hornets nest near a children’s play park in Powys.

A large nest of hornets have been found near the scout hut near Ysgol Calon y Dderwen in Newtown, leading to concern from local residents.

The nest was initially spotted by Carl Ferris who was concerned that they might be the more aggressive Asian hornet.

“We were in town enjoying the sunshine and spotted a few things flying above the tree by the children's park,” said Carl.

“We noticed a dead one and took a photograph. I know what a hornet's colouring is like and noticed this one wasn't very common in this area.”

A nest was then found nearby prompting concerns for children who come to the area frequently.

Montgomeryshire Wildlife trust said that their experts could not be “100 per cent on the species” but thought that it was more likely that the hornet is more likely to be the European variety who are larger but are less aggressive than the Asian hornet.

Powys County Council was approached about whether the nest would be cleared but said it would not be dealing with it as the council does not have a pest control service.
