A MAN has been jailed after he admitted assaulting his ex-partner who was pregnant with their child.

Nathan Foster, 33, flew into a rage with his ex at her Welshpool home on April 7, accusing her of sleeping with a friend.

Swansea Crown Court heard on Monday, June 3, that their relationship had been erratic since it began in December last year.

Foster attacked the victim, who was 15 weeks pregnant with their child, and damaged items inside her property, including television sets.

When police arrived, a drunk Foster told them Ms Rivers had been the aggressor and damaged her own property.

He initially denied four charges, but pleaded guilty on assault and criminal damage charges on the morning of his trial, in May.

Foster, who was remanded into custody after his arrest in April, appeared at Monday’s hearing via videolink from HMP Swansea.

Prosecutor Ieuan Rees said the defendant and his former partner had been known to each other for a number of years, and had been in a relationship from December 2023.

“It was abusive from the outset,” said Mr Rees.

“On April 7 police were alerted to a disturbance in Welshpool. Witnesses described hearing the victim shout ‘Help, get off me’ and the baby was mentioned.

“A neighbour heard items being thrown around the room and she heard the victim shout ‘phone the police’. She said this had happened on previous occasions.

“The defendant accused her of sleeping with a friend. He threw things about and damaged a TV. He was heard to say the incident was ‘worth going to jail for’.

“Police arrived, he was drunk. She said he had chucked a bottle of milk at her. He said she was the aggressor and had damaged her own property.”

Mr Rees said Foster had 48 previous convictions including 10 committed against people, and that the defendant had breached a community order committing this assault.

In a victim impact statement provided by the victim, read out by Mr Rees, she said: “I was assaulted by Nathan Foster while pregnant and had to attend hospital.

“I am seeking a restraining order as I am extremely afraid of him and want it to protect me and my unborn child.”

The offence for which Foster was made subject of a community order occurred in January of this year, in which he was found dealing drugs to homeless people. He admitted possessing cannabis as well as possessing an offensive weapon – said to be a telescopic baton.

Defending Foster, of Grosvenor Street, Stoke-on-Trent, Alexandra Wilson said: “His strongest mitigation is his guilty plea.

County Times:

“The defendant is aware of the real prospect of immediate custody and of the seriousness of this offence.

“I would ask for any sentence to be suspended. He has been in custody since April. As for the restraining order the defendant has agreed not to enter the Powys area.”

Judge Catherine Richards jailed Foster for three months for the assault. She also revoked the community order and instead jailed him for another month, giving a total custodial sentence of four months.

There was no separate penalty for criminal damage and Judge Richards recorded formal not guilty verdicts on two other charges, after the prosecution offered no evidence.

She also granted a two-year restraining order.
