As the 2024, Powys based Urdd Eisteddfod reaches its final few days, one of its prize winners has become one of the event’s standout stars.

Ruby Davies, a pupil from Ysgol Gynradd Swiss Valley, Carmarthenshire, has become a viral hit as footage of her accepting a prize has charmed people both at the Eisteddfod grounds in Mathrafal Farm and beyond.

The primary school pupil won for best in individual recitation for Welsh learners in Years 5 and 6. While being interviewed by S4C presenter Mari Lovgreen, Ruby described how she was “so happy” to win the award, enthusiastically agreed that she was “very good at performing” but also admitted that she couldn’t understand the questions she was asked in Welsh.

The honest answers didn’t stop there as Ruby was then asked if her dad was enjoying himself at Eisteddfod.

She said: “Well, not the mud part and the queuing.”

Audiences roared with laughter at the Eisteddfod stage, but the video then proved to be a hit with audiences outside of Wales, being shared widely across social media.

Ruby’s interview even found its way to the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, where host Greg James described it as “brilliant”.

He said: “Ruby is an absolute star. She didn’t quite understand what the lady presenting her the prize was saying.

"But you know what? She’s so quick on her feet and it will serve her well in the showbiz world that I’m sure she’ll traverse.

“She’s just so honest and that will serve her well. So Ruby congratulations.”
