A woman raised on a farm near Llanidloes who is responsible for commissioning some of Welsh language television’s most popular and successful programmes had the honour of being the National Urdd Eisteddfod President of the Day on Wednesday.

Elen Rhys has been Head of Entertainment at S4C for almost a decade and has brought various award-winning programmes to our screens including Priodas Pum Mil and Iaith ar Daith, and also some of Wales’ most important events including the National Eisteddfod, Young Farmers, Cân i Gymru and Y Llais (The Voice).

Elen, who was brought up near Llyn Clywedog, said she felt “privileged and pride” to be one of a select few from Montgomeryshire chosen to be president.

She said that she recognises her privileged position at S4C and respects the responsibility she has of celebrating and reflecting the diverse audiences in Wales, adding that the audience is “at the heart of everything”.

She added that the Urdd's influence is hugely felt by her - expressing her appreciation for the many opportunities - without the Urdd she would not have had the confidence to pursue her career.

“I have so many happy memories,” Elen said.

“Making lifelong friends is the main thing whether it was at Llangrannog, competing or whilst being a member of Urdd’s National Theatre. Joining the cast of Pinocchio when I was 16 and touring Welsh theatres was a highlight.

“Although my mother tongue is Welsh, I attended the local English-speaking secondary school at the time. So, socialising with friends in Welsh for two weeks and having great experiences while performing was a turning point for me.”

It was a busy week for Elen on the Eisteddfod field near Meifod. She adjudicated the recitation competitions and presented from the stage.
