The Newtown 10K Run was back for its second year, with hundreds of people taking part.

Club runners and fun runners hit the streets and river paths for the 10km race on Sunday (May 26).

Connor Rogers was the winner of this year's Newtown 10K, organised by Adrenaline Sporting Events, after completing the course in an impressive 32 minutes and 29 seconds.

First female runner to cross the line was Maldwyn Harriers' Hannah Thomas who was cheered to the finishing line in a time of 40 minutes and 12 seconds.

Hannah, who was first female at the Welshpool 10K earlier this year, said: "Winning on home soil was all the better".

Newtown firefighter Rob Jones completed the course wearing 10kg of kit in one hour, 20 minutes and 29 seconds.

The 32-year-old ran to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity which does "spectacular" work for the fire and rescue community and their families.

Rob said that although he's relieved to cross the finishing line, "the support was absolutely amazing and I can't thank enough for the donations".

He praised organisers Adrenaline Sporting Events for running a "really well organised" event.

"I want to also thank the crew at Newtown Fire Station and the few who also did the 10K," Rob added.

Five other members of his crew also ran the Newtown 10K: Lisa Reynolds (57:55), Jordan Kelly (59:11), Craig Neil (44:29 and Paul Armes (1:14:21).

"Well done to Firefighter Rob Jones who took on this gruelling challenge and completed this challenge for charity," the fire service said.

"He ran this to raise important funds for the great work The Fire Fighters Charity do.

"Also a massive congratulations to a few of the crew who also ran the Newtown 10k today.

"Great to have some support along the way!"

Runners praised the event and Newtown residents cheering along the route for making the event even more enjoyable.

Oswestry Olympians' Neil Wilkinson said: "The awesome support of the Newtown people cheering us on made today’s 10k extremely special, fantabulous turnout."

Aberystwyth AC's Lina Land, who ran 49 minutes and 42 seconds, described the running conditions as "perfect" and praised this year's "gorgeous" medal of perhaps the most iconic sight in Newtown, the Clock Tower building.

She said: "The first few miles of the course were fast, in fact perfect for my strengths.

"The final two miles were a different story though, so many technical bits, it felt like an off road race at times. I had to really hang in there to achieve the time that I did."
