The Mayor of Welshpool and new High Sheriff were present as a new garden room was opened at a Powys care home.

The grand event at Llys Hafren care home held on May 11 saw the Mayor Nick Howells and High Sheriff Kate Silk join staff, residents, and close friends.

The grand 'garden room', named The Acorns was unveiled to joyous attendees who enjoyed cakes baked by the home’s kitchen staff, picnic food, and music from resident DJ, Jerry.

The new addition was the brainchild of home cook Jean Thomas who helped create the room in memory of her late husband, Nigel.

The service manager, Bea Wickstead said: "We’re so pleased so many people were able to join us for the opening of the new garden room."

The residents had a significant role in shaping this development.

She added: "We want to make sure that our residents were – and will continue to be – active participants in developments such as this.

"We met with them so they could decide what they wanted the room for, how they wanted it decorated and the colours they’d like.

"Leading up to the opening, staff and residents helped paint and decorate the room and gardening parties were held where the residents planted pots, cleaned garden furniture, and helped with the grand tidy up.

"The launch event was fantastic, with lots of singing and dancing – especially from the Mayor!"
