Powys is home to several popular and widely visited garden centres which make for an ideal spot to visit over the bank holiday weekend.

With an extra-long weekend ahead and warmer weather as we head into summer, garden centres make for popular outings for people who live in Powys or those who are visiting as they look to make a start to their gardening season.

With a big number of centres to choose from in the Mid Wales county, we’ve collected some of the best regarded in the area.

Old Railway Line Garden Centre

This garden centre, based in Three Cocks, near Llyswen, was awarded status as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ at the prestigious Garden Centre Association Awards in January 2023, marking it as one of the best in the UK.

The family-run business also won the title of ‘Best Destination Garden Centre’ in Wales and the West region, as well as the Graden Centre Association’s ‘Environment & Community Award’.

The centre has also won the title of ‘Best Garden Centre’ nine years running for the Wales and the West area and has been named best in the UK on two previous occasions, including in 2021.

Derwen Garden Centre

The Derwen Garden Centre in Welshpool sells a range of indoor and seasonal outdoor plants and bulbs and also gifts, bird food, tools and has a restaurant.

According to the centre’s website: “We pride ourselves on our extensive range of plants, and on our knowledgeable staff who are always on hand to offer advice. Our relationship with the Dingle Nurseries means we are unique as a garden centre, having access to a huge range of plants.”

The centre also has a range of themed gardens, a maze, a restaurant and a shop.

Midway Plants

This traditional plant nursery near Llandrindod Wells offers a selection of home grown plants and plenty of pots and compost, to start anyone’s growing season.

The centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm, while many of the plants they grow are all hardened off to cope with the local weather conditions, having been propagated on the premises by seed, cutting or small plug plants, making them ready to plant in any garden.

Coed-Y-Dinas

The garden centre in Welshpool is found within the 70,000 sq ft Coed-Y-Dinas home and country centre.

The Coed-Y-Dinas website describes the centre by saying: “If you’re looking for a wonderful selection of plants, coupled with great gardening advice then you’re in the right place.

“Our outdoor plant area is managed and run by a very strong team who have a wealth of knowledge to advise you on what will suit your garden. You will also find a great selection of pots and sculpture from around the world.”
