Llanfyllin’s public toilets were given a much needed deep clean by the council’s ‘bog squad’ following several complaints from residents and visitors.

After a series of complaints about the state of Llanfyllin’s public toilets, town councillors Jackie Griffin and Sean Cowham decided to form a sub committee, nicknamed ‘the bog squad’, devoted to maintaining the facilities.

On Monday, May 19, the bog squad joined the facilities regular cleaner to give Llanfyllin public toilets a small renovation to ensure they are kept in clean and working order.

Over the weekend, Cllrs Griffin and Cowham fitted new hand soap dispensers, replaced toilet seats, cubicle locks, and toilet tissue dispensers.

Cllr Griffin said: “We believe that clean and well-maintained public toilets are essential for both residents and visitors. It's a small but significant part of making Llanfyllin a welcoming place."

The new features add to the refurbishment of the public toilets, as the old tiles were cladded out with hygienic, easy-to-clean panels, improving the look of the facilities while also being easier to clean and manage.

Looking ahead, the council are planning to repair the automatic flushing system on the gents urinals and fit a new hand dryer in the bathroom to replace the current broken one.

They will also be turning their attention to the interior cubicle doors as well as the exterior of the public toilets over the next few weeks to refresh the woodwork and painted areas outside.

Cllr Cowham added: “The response from the community for our efforts will hopefully give us visibility and show the town councils commitment to being proactive and an active and working part of our community.

“Our hope is people will appreciate the efforts we're putting into maintaining these facilities, and the Loo Watch scheme will allow everyone to play a part in keeping our town tidy."

As well as refurbishing the toilets to improve their current state, the council have put in measures to hopefully keep the toilets looking their best. With the ‘Loo Watch’ scheme, residents can now phone in and report any issues to the Town Council.

Llanfyllin mayor Cllr Peter Lewis thanked Cllrs Griffin and Cowham for their efforts, saying: “I have always believed clean toilets are an essential part of a successful town whether it be for people or families driving through wanting to stop for a break or as a destination town.”
