Powys homes have the lowest Energy Efficiency Score in England and Wales.

A recent study by energy experts at Utility Bidder analysed official government data to reveal areas in England and Wales with the most energy-efficient dwellings and those with the least.

The study considered average energy consumption, CO2 emissions, heating costs, and hot water costs before awarding each local authority and region an ‘Energy Efficiency Score’ out of 10.

Out of 318 local authority areas covered in the study, Powys scored 0.11 out of 10, scored in the bottom 10 for every factor, and spent the second-most to heat their homes and the fifth-highest amount on hot water.

James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder, said: "Households in England and Wales face constant attempts to tackle the ever-increasing cost of living, and with this, look for as many tricks as possible to keep their bills under control.

“We aren’t surprised that London local authorities dominate the resultant rankings for energy efficiency, with Hackney ranking as one of seven London boroughs to make the top 10.

"As we’ve seen in our study, home energy efficiency can vary considerably depending on where you are in the country, which can mean higher bills and colder homes.

"With this in mind, it might be wise to consider steps you can take to ensure your home is as energy-efficient as possible; these include installing double or triple glazing, updating your boiler, switching to a heat pump, using LED bulbs, and draught-proofing your home.”

Knowsley has been named the most energy-efficient area in England and Wales, boasting an impressive score of 9.69 out of 10.

London also showed high efficiency in their household energy usage, with Newham, Islington, Barking and Dagenham, Southwark, and Wandsworth featuring in the top ten most energy-efficient regions.
