THE first local show of the season is less than a month away and preparations are in full swing.
Llanbister Show, the first of the local season in Powys, is taking place on Monday, May 27, the end of the May bank holiday, with all the traditional activities, as well as some fresh attractions and the return of some of last year’s popular innovations.
The Wye Valley Axemen and Wye Valley Falconry are welcomed for the first time and there will be sideshows and entertainment including music and a wide variety of community and craft stalls.
A bar and ice cream van will be on site and refreshments will be provided in the tea tent by Cantal YFC.

Sections this year include adults and children's crafts, cookery, produce, over-16s art and photography competitions, a horse show, jumping, dog and sheep shows, a raffle, fur and feather small animal and bird show (subject to prevailing Avian Flu regulations), children's athletics, a carriage driving display, a vintage, custom and agricultural vehicle and machinery event, and the ‘Pig Show’.
The build-up to the show will see a primary school children’s ‘Prince and Princess of Llanbister’ disco taking place on Friday, May 17, and a car treasure hunt on Sunday, May 26, followed in the evening by the popular speed shearing, together with barbecue and bar at Llanbister Community Hall.
Entries are welcome from all around the area and most will be accepted on the day, except the Pig Show (which is being held under the auspices of the Wales and Border Counties Pig Breeders Association) and carriage driving, which must be booked in advance.
Fur and feather entries are accepted on the day, but poultry cage bookings must be notified in advance.
Organisers are keen to draw visitors’ attention to new regulations from this April which require all organisations, including even small shows, to sort and recycle all their waste, so they are urging everyone to help by separating theirs using the marked containers provided.
The printed programme is now available in various shops and public places. Some section details and competition rules can be viewed on the Llanbister Show Facebook page or via email request to llanbistershow@hotmail.com, Facebook or phone the secretary on 07598 101713 (leave message).
