A MET Office yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Wales - including large sections of northern Powys - today (May 6).
The warning is in place from 1pm until 9pm this afternoon.
In the warning, it states that thunderstorms and heavy downpours may cause flooding and travel disruption today.
Welshpool, Newtown and Llanidloes are among the towns forecast to be affected. The warning goes as far down as Llandrindod Wells, but stops short of Builth Wells and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). It does not reach as far west as Machynlleth and the coast.
The Met Office’s warning added: “Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are likely to break out in some places this afternoon and evening.
“Although not all places will catch these storms and downpours, where they do occur, 20-40mm of rain may fall in some places in an hour or two.”
What to expect:
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
- There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
- There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
